The Adventure in Floating Town

BY: SARAH GOLDBERGER

Annie woke up from a deep sleep.

“Your breakfast is getting cold,” her mother yelled, in a high voice.

Annie walked slowly down the stairs, and then she collapsed on a wooden chair and started to eat her toast. She rested her head on the table.

The window magically opened, and she slowly floated out.

Annie was terrified. She looked behind her shoulder. She saw a tall, young woman with brown hair and blue eyes. She was wearing a pink dress.

“Hello. My name is Lucy,” the woman said softly.

Annie was staring at the woman. She was huge! In fact, all of the people were huge.

“Why are you so small?” asked Lucy.

“Why are you so big?” asked Annie.

“This is perfect. We’ve been looking for a floater as small as you to go on the adventure.”

“What’s a floater? And what adventure?” Annie asked.

“Oh, my dear! You’re not a floater?”

“Well I certainly am floating now. But I’m a person,” said Annie.

“It’s a long story about what adventure we want you to go on, but I’ll do my best to shorten it,” said Lucy.

“There are two queens of Floating Town who look exactly alike,” said Lucy. “One of them is evil, but we can’t tell which one. She is going to take over Floating Town and make it so it doesn’t float anymore.”

Annie put her hair behind her ears.

“We need you to help save Floating Town. You’re small, you can sneak into the queens’ castles,” Lucy explained. “So will you go on this adventure?”

“Yes, I’d love to,” said Annie, “but explain to me about what I have to do.”

She twirled her hair around her finger. Now everyone in Floating Town was watching.

“Well,” said Lucy, “the first thing you have to do is go spy in both queens’ castles. Once you have figured out which queen is evil, you have to steal the magic ball, because that’s what she’s using to take over Floating Town. The magic ball is sparkly gold. So, are you ready?” asked Lucy.

“Yes,” Annie smiled.

“Good luck,” Lucy said.

Lucy told Annie how to get to the queens’ castles.

“The castles are right next to each other,” Lucy explained.

In a couple of minutes, Annie was on her way to the queens’ castles happily floating and singing her favorite songs. Through the corner of her eye, she saw a little dog floating.

“Hello,” the dog said in a quiet voice.

Annie fainted. The dog ran up to her and started licking her face.

“You… you… talk,” she said softly.

“Yes, I do,” the dog said.

“My name is Annie,” the girl said.

And they started on their journey.

“My name is Risky, and I am a dog,” Risky sang.

His singing was terrible and it hurt Annie’s ears, but she didn’t want to tell Risky that because she was afraid it would hurt his feelings.
As they floated across
Floating Town, Risky’s tail slowly went down after wagging it for a very long time. Annie’s blond hair was floating, and her light-blue dress was all dirty from floating so far. Soon, they were there at the queens’ castles.

The beautiful castles glowed in Annie’s brown eyes. They were both made out of golden-brown bricks, and they each had one bright-blue brick that said “Queen’s Castle” on it.

There was a moment of silence. Annie asked Risky, “Are you ready?”

Risky said, “Yes.”

So they quietly started to sneak into the castle on the right. They tiptoed and looked around them. They saw it! They knew it was the correct castle because they saw the magical ball, which was under a desk.

They walked toward it, but it was too late. The queen had already walked into the room. Annie and Risky quickly hid under a shiny black chair.

The queen was ugly. She had gray hair that was never brushed, and she wore an ugly sweat shirt and sweat pants. She smelled like moldy cheese.

She hadn’t noticed Risky and Annie, and by now they were all sticky and sweaty from being scrunched up under the seat. The queen carefully picked up the magical ball and took it out of the glass case. Risky and Annie wanted to take it away from her, but it was too late. She had already started to say the magic words.

Suddenly, Floating Town made aloud noise and fell. It was on the ground, so no one could make Floating Town float again.

“Ha, ha!” she screamed.

But suddenly, she fell over and landed on the ground. She was dead. She probably had used too much power with the magical ball.

Annie and Risky cheered, but they were still sad. They started crying.

I wish there was never an evil queen,” said Risky.

“Me, too,” said Annie.

Their tears were dripping on the magical ball, which was now broken.

“Will you please make Floating Town float again?” they kept asking the broken pieces that were the size of little bugs, but nothing happened.

As Annie and Risky walked back to tell all the people that they were sorry that they failed, Annie took her lucky penny out of her pocket. It floated right out of her hand. She looked at the penny, and then she looked at Risky. They opened their eyes and wide and smiled at each other.

They both realized that they must have restored Floating Town with the help of the broken magical ball. Everyone gathered around them and cheered. It was the happiest moment of their lives.
